Tyler H. Goodwin-Souffront is an active hornist, composer, and educator currently residing in Hickory, North Carolina.
Goodwin-Souffront is an active professional musician and participates in many orchestras throughout the Southeastern and Midwestern Region. Of note, Tyler is the fourth horn of the Brevard Philharmonic Orchestra (Brevard, NC), the fourth horn of Symphony of the Mountains (Kingsport, TN) the fourth horn (and former Principal horn) of Appalachia: A Southeastern Wind Symphony (Knoxville, TN), principal horn of Winds of the Mountain Empire (Wise, VA), third horn of the Poinsett Wind Symphony (founding member, Greenville, SC), and utility horn of the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra (Johnson City, TN), in addition of being a member of the Corridor Brass Quintet (Greenville, SC), St. Philip Neri Brass Quintet (Fort Mill, SC) and Ascension Brass Quintet (founding member, Bloomington, IN). Goodwin-Souffront actively performs with other ensembles throughout the country including the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra (Salisbury, NC), Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra (Hendersonville, NC), Union Symphony Orchestra (Monroe, NC), Bloomington Symphony Orchestra (Bloomington, IN), the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble (Bloomington, IN), and the GAMAC Chamber Orchestra (Anderson, SC). Goodwin-Souffront is formerly a member of the Fountain Inn Symphony Orchestra (Principal horn - Fountain Inn, SC), the Greenville Lyric Opera (Principal horn - Greenville, SC), Foothills Philharmonic Orchestra (Associate Principal), Charlotte Civic Orchestra (Third horn - Charlotte, NC) in addition to Dolce Winds (founding member, Greenville, SC), the Horn Society of the Carolinas (Charlotte, NC), the Greensboro Chamber Brass (Greensboro, NC) and the Greensboro Wind Quintet (Greensboro, NC).
In addition to his large ensemble contributions, Goodwin-Souffront loves playing in the pit for musical theater where he is an active member of the Greer Children's Theatre (Greer, SC) and formerly the FIRE Repertory Theatre (Fountain Inn, SC) and the National Children's Theater. He has performed in productions of Beauty and the Beast, Guys and Dolls, Into the Woods, Carousel, The Wizard of Oz, Annie, Young Frankenstein, Shrek! The Musical, and Once Upon A Mattress.
Goodwin-Souffront is currently a third year doctoral student at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where he is a student of Denise Tryon (former Philadelphia Orchestra). In Bloomington, Tyler had the pleasure of studying with many notable musicians in the horn world such as Dale Clevenger (primary teacher, former Chicago Symphony), Jeff Nelsen (Canadian Brass), Richard Seraphinoff (former Detroit Symphony), Tod Bowermaster (Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra), Margaret Tung (Cincinnati Conservatory of Music), and Sean Yancer. In addition, Goodwin-Souffront was a founding member of the Ascension Brass Quintet which premiered six new compositions for brass quintet in 2023.
Goodwin-Souffront received his Masters degree from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro (2021) from Dr. Abigail Pack. There, Tyler was a part of the centennial recording project where he was featured in the work Spilled Orange by Judy Bozone. During the summer of 2020, Goodwin-Souffront became on inaugural member of the Invested Musician program studying under Andrew Bain (Los Angeles Philharmonic). Tyler has also studied horn with Dr. Darian Washington (North Greenville University), Dr. James Naigus (University of Georgia), Jeffrey Scott (Oberlin Conservatory), Elizabeth Freimuth (Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra), Lisa Ford (Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra), and Rebekah Daley (North Carolina Symphony Orchestra).
Goodwin-Souffront is currently the Adjunct Professor of Horn at Lenoir-Rhyne University (Hickory, NC), Limestone University (Gaffney, SC), as well as being the Resident Instructor of Horn in the Fort Mill School District (Fort Mill, SC). Goodwin-Souffront's students have participated in honor ensembles such as the South Carolina All-State Band, South Carolina All-State Orchestra, South Carolina All-Region Band, North Carolina All-State Band, North Carolina All-District Band, Greenville All-County Band (Greenville, SC), Anderson All-County Band (Anderson, SC), the Carolina Youth Symphony (Greenville, SC), the Greenville County Youth Orchestra (Greenville, SC), the SCMEA Intercollegiate Honor Band, and the Honor Band of America (Indianapolis, IN). Some of his students have won professional auditions in the Lonestar Winds (Dallas, TX), Sailsbury Symphony Orchestra (Salisbury, NC), Foothills Philharmonic Orchestra (Greenville, SC), and the Upstate Winds (Greenville, SC). Goodwin-Souffront's students have also ventured in various professions in life such as music education, music performance, music therapy, law, real estate appraising, international cybernetics, criminal justice, psychology and more from universities such as Furman University, the University of South Carolina, the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, Indiana University, University of North Texas, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Clemson University, Converse University, Western Carolina University, and Bob Jones University. Goodwin-Souffront has held positions as an Instructor of Horn and Instructor of Applied Brass at Pecknel Music Studios (Greenville, SC), Greenville County Schools (Greenville, SC), Spartanburg 5 Schools (Duncan, SC), and Cuthbertson Middle and High Schools (Waxhaw, NC) while maintaining his own hybrid studio. Goodwin-Souffront has given masterclasses and performances at the University of Virginia in Wise (Wise, VA), Illinois Wesleyan University (Bloomington, IL), the Youth Orchestras of Charlotte (Charlotte, NC), and with the Knoxville Youth Symphony Orchestra (Knoxville, TN).
Goodwin-Souffront's research has led him to present at acclaimed national and regional conferences such as the the International Horn Society Summer Symposium in 2023 (Linguistics in Music Education), the MidSouth Horn Workshop in 2024 (Building Your First Studio), the Southeast Horn Workshop in 2020 (Sliding Into Trombone Literature: Incorporating Trombone Music in Low Horn Education) and 2023 (Linguistics in Music: A Course Design for the Undergraduate Music Major), the Olde English Music Conference (York, South Carolina) in 2023 (Starting the Horn: Where to Begin?), and the South Carolina Music Educators Association Conference (Linguistic in Music Education: Incorporating Language and Music in the Secondary Music Classroom) in 2024. Tyler has also performed as a Regional Artist at the 2024 MidSouth Horn Workshop. 2020 Southeast Horn Workshop, the SCMTNA Artist Showcase in 2022 (Greenville, SC), and the North Carolina Horn Day in 2018, 2019 and 2020 (all in Greensboro, NC).
As a composer, Goodwin-Souffront has ventured in many avenues of music including wind ensemble, orchestral, instrumental chamber (brass quintet, string trio/quartet, wind quintet, and mixed chamber), choral, in addition to solo works for horn, trombone, piano, and clarinet. As a film composer, Goodwin-Souffront's work in the short film The Jap Room won "Best Original Music" in several film festivals including the Making Kindness Film Festival. His string trio Trio Chromati was a finalist for the American Composers Forum: Call for Scores, and his orchestral tone poem Sultan's Pride was a semi-finalist in the Kaleidoscope Orchestra: Call for Scores. Works of Goodwin-Souffront have been premiered by the Carolina Youth Symphony, the University of North Carolina in Greensboro Horn choir, the Furman University Wind Quintet, and more. Goodwin-Souffront is a former student of Jay Bocook and Dr. Mark Kilstofte (both Furman University) in addition to David Maslanka and William Bolcom.
Administratively, Goodwin-Souffront is the Personnel Manager for Appalachia: A Southeastern Wind Symphony. Formerly, Goodwin-Souffront held positions with the Foothills Philharmonic Orchestra (Board of Directors: Education Specialist), the Greensboro Chamber Brass (Social Media Coordinator), Furman University Department of Bands (Music Librarian), University of North Carolina in Greensboro (Assistant to the Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts), Tau Kappa Epsilon: Furman University Chapter (Social Media Coordinator), and the Carolina Youth Symphony (Music Intern). Goodwin-Souffront is also the founder and artistic director of the Pecknel Summer Band and Orchestra Camp (Greenville, SC).
