A native of Inman, South Carolina, Tyler H. Goodwin started as a trombonist graduating from Chapman High School in 2011 studying under Christopher Smith while also participating in the Palmetto Youth Orchestra, Carolina Youth Symphony, Converse College Wind Ensemble SCBDA All-Region Bands, SCBDA All-State Bands and the Music for All Honor Band of America presented by the Yamaha Corporation.
Goodwin then went to Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina studying Music Performance (primarily on trombone) under Dr. Mark E. Britt and Music Composition under Jay Bocook and Dr. Mark Kilstofte. While there, Goodwin had the chance to study composition under many notable composers such as David Maslanka and William Bolcom while maintaining his primary studies under the illustrious wind band composer, Jay Bocook. During his undergraduate studies, Goodwin had the chance to perform in the university's Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensembles, Jazz Combos, various brass quintets, and trombone quartets while given the opportunity to perform at the College Band Director's National Association Conference in 2013, the South Carolina All-State Band Weekend, as well as chances to perform in famed concert halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Chicago Symphony Hall. While interning for the Carolina Youth Symphony, Goodwin was also given the chance to begin his professional career continuing to perform for the Converse College Wind Ensemble, playing with national touring musical theater companies for productions such as "Annie," performing with various local theater productions with FIRE Theater Company of Fountain Inn, South Carolina in shows such as "Into the Woods" on French horn, as well as being an inaugural (and continuing) member of the Poinsett Wind Symphony playing bass trombone since 2013. Goodwin's work have been premiered and showcased for the Furman Engaged Student Events as well as being a national finalist for the American Composer's Forum Student Composers Competition for his twelve-tone string trio "Trio Chromati."
After graduating from Furman University in 2015, Goodwin shifted his musical progression and solely focused on his progression on the French horn where he then studied under Dr. Darian Washington of North Greenville University in Tigerville, South Carolina while working as a Sheet Music Specialist and Music Product Specialist at Pecknel Music Company in Greenville, South Carolina. While studying under Dr. Washington, Goodwin had many professional opportunities such as being appointed the principal horn of the Fountain Inn Symphony Orchestra in Fountain Inn, South Carolina, the associate principal horn of the Foothills Philharmonic Orchestra in Greenville, South Carolina, the third horn for the GAMAC Chamber Orchestra in Anderson, South Carolina, the third horn of the Charlotte Civic Orchestra in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the third horn of the Rivertree Singers Chamber Orchestra of Greenville, South Carolina. Tyler still kept active in the musical theater scene as he played for numerous musical theater productions in shows such as "Guys and Dolls," "Once Upon A Mattress," "The Wizard of Oz," and so much more.
Goodwin was also given the chance to teach over 75 students over a four year period teaching applied brass at Pecknel Music Company. Many of his students went on to participate in their local All-County Bands, the SCBDA All-Region Bands, the SCBDA All-State Bands, the Music for All Honor Band of America and Honor Orchestra of America hosted by the Yamaha Corporation, the University of South Carolina Honor Band Clinic, the Winthrop University Honor Band Invitational, the Limestone College Band Clinic, the Furman University Band and Orchestra Camp, the Furman University Honor Band Clinic as well maintaining many Superior Ratings at the SCBDA Solo and Ensemble Festival. Goodwin's students have also participated in the Carolina Youth Symphony (with performances at Carnegie Hall in New York City), the Greenville County Youth Orchestra, various Drum Corps International Programs such as the Cadets, Carolina Crown, Santa Clara Vanguard, and Spirit of Atlanta. Many of his students have gone on to colleges such as the University of South Carolina, Bob Jones University, Clemson University, Lander University and so many more.
Currently, Goodwin is currently working on his Masters in Music Performance in Horn and is the graduate assistant for the horn studio at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro studying under Dr. Abigail Pack. There, Goodwin is the hornist for the Greensboro Chamber Brass Quintet while also performing for the university's Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Casella Sinfonietta. Tyler will be going into his last year of his Masters next school year and will hope to graduate in May 2021 and then move to pursue his DMA in Music Performance in Horn the next academic year.
Alongside school, Goodwin has been given many opportunities to play in various areas of the Southeast Region of the United States, notably being the fourth horn of the Brevard Philharmonic Orchestra in Brevard, North Carolina while also performing with ensembles such as Symphony of the Mountains in Kingsport, Tennessee, the Asheville Symphony Orchestra in Asheville, North Carolina, the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra in Hendersonville, North Carolina as well as still continuing to perform with the Foothills Philharmonic Orchestra, Appalachia Wind Symphony, River Tree Singers Chamber Orchestra, and GAMAC Chamber Orchestra as well as performing in various other places in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Tennessee. Goodwin is also the horn teacher at Cuthbertson Middle School and High School in Waxhaw, North Carolina.
In his spare time, Tyler likes to play video games, watch various YouTube videos, read books, as well as cook food from all over the globe.
